We are proud of our wonderful, hardworking, and generous students who participated in the volunteer project VOLONTEEN – Heart of the Community in collaboration with the Red Cross Zagreb during this school year. Through a series of workshops and activities, they developed skills that cannot be learned from textbooks: empathy, solidarity, responsibility, helping, listening, and sincerely serving others.
As part of the project, 13 workshops and numerous volunteer actions were held at various locations. Our students helped prepare more than 600 humanitarian packages, spent time with residents of the Maksimir and Jordanovac nursing homes, participated in workshops with people with intellectual disabilities, volunteered at the Dumovec and Noah’s Ark animal shelters, the Zoo, and many other places.
They particularly remember the words of wisdom they heard from older nursing home residents, such as the message from 92-year-old Krešo: “Don’t rush to grow up, every phase of life has its own beauty.” Such life experiences and encounters leave a deep impression and stay with them for a lifetime.
According to the project results, 72% of students stated that they would gladly participate in similar activities again, which further confirms how important such projects are for their development.
A big thank you to the Red Cross Zagreb for the excellent cooperation and the opportunity for our children to be part of the community in the most beautiful way possible. We especially thank our dedicated teachers who led the students through the entire project with a lot of enthusiasm, patience, and heart, and showed by their example what it means to be part of a community and education that nurtures the heart and character.
These kinds of projects are part of our school program in which we nurture not only knowledge but also values that accompany our students throughout their lives.
