EXTRACURRICULAR Activities

Translation Group

TRANSLATION GROUP under the careful guidance of our teachers Lui and Jerkić: the activity includes translation exercises of various texts related to textbook topics and topics chosen by students. Students will master the skill of translation (which is also assessed from the 3rd grade within the evaluation element called linguistic mediation), and as part of the workshop, students will also prepare for the “Juvenes Translatores” young translators competition organized by the European Commission. Within the workshop, they will participate in a pilot project for the European Day of Languages 2021, organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation, aiming to encourage as many schools as possible to participate in this year’s European Day of Languages.

I Volunteer

The goal is to educate students about the importance and values of volunteering and to promote volunteerism. Collaboration with the Volunteer Center Zagreb and selection of projects in which they could participate. We will try to initiate our own projects and encourage other students and teachers to get involved in volunteering. There is a possibility of establishing a volunteer club and collaborating with other school volunteer clubs. “Volunteering is one of the cornerstones of civil society, as it embodies the noblest aspirations of humanity: the pursuit of peace, freedom, choice, security, and justice for all people.” The leader is Petra Orešković, our French and Spanish teacher.

DEBATE CLUB

We are happy to announce that after a long time, PKG will once again have a debate club. In the pleasant environment of our classrooms, under the expert guidance of one of our former students, Brina Verdnik, our students will have the opportunity to explore the world of debate. They will debate in the “World Schools” format, which is the most widespread format in high school competitions, and they will have the opportunity to participate in some of them. They will also have the chance to approach and debate various social, political, economic, religious, and societal issues, and with the encouragement of our leader, they will learn how to properly and rationally defend and argue their positions. We look forward to expanding our knowledge horizons together. Leader: Brina Verdnik, a PKG alumna who successfully graduated in June and is now a first-year student of comparative literature and philosophy!

Film Group

The goal is to produce short video/film works to primarily create a core of authors who design, shoot, and edit their video stories (this means the group can expand or contract depending on the author’s idea). Initially, the focus would be on a one-minute video by each member individually, then on a three-minute group work (or in pairs), and finally on a ten-minute joint film. Mobile and SLR APS-C cameras would be used along with digital editing. Leader: Zvonimir Bošnjak, professor of sociology, ethics, and politics and economy.

Hiking Group

Once a month (probably on Saturdays), we will go on a trip, starting with easier routes on Medvednica and Samobor Hills, and ending with a more serious one, like Velebit (possibly for the whole weekend). Our Latin and Greek teacher, Jasna Vučić, will lead you to the mountains.

A Glimpse into Linguistics

Bojan Glavašević, a PKG alumnus, linguist, and politician, offers our students the following two extracurricular activities this school year. Let’s learn and socialize with the best!

Throughout one school year, we will learn the most important things about the most fascinating human ability – language and speech. How do we learn languages? How are languages interconnected, and what exactly can we do with them? And how does the whole story work, from poetry to politics? A Glimpse into Linguistics can provide answers to these and many other questions. A warning to those interested: new questions are very likely!

Politics as a Calling

What does it mean to engage in politics, and how do things actually work there? What are the power dynamics, and what kind of people make decisions that affect our lives? Are all politicians the same, or are there differences among them? This workshop is a deep dive into the world of politics and activism, after which participants will know everything they need to know about politics and politicians, and some of them will have the opportunity to meet them and ask them anything they are curious about. Leader: Bojan Glavašević, PKG alumnus, linguist, and politician

Young Archaeologists

Vladimir Posavec, our history teacher and former frontman of the school band August Brothers, offers students two new activities this year!

The activity of the Young Archaeologists group is designed as an introduction to the basics of archaeology as a science and professional terminology, as well as gaining knowledge about ancient civilizations and, depending on interest, the late antiquity and early medieval periods. Discussions are planned on all topics of the mentioned period that can be archaeologically determined, independent research and projects, discussions on documentary films (and even feature films, with special attention to authenticity issues), and if the epidemiological situation allows, visits to archaeological sites in the nearby area.

GUITAR FOR
ABSOLUTE Beginners

Professor Posavec for all those who have felt the urge to play the guitar but have not yet had the opportunity to try on their own!

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
AND NATURE PROTECTION

The goal is to introduce students to the issues of sustainable development and nature protection through field research, projects, workshops, and theoretical background. The group would meet weekly. Students will present their proposals once a month and participate in creating the plan. At the beginning of the school year, we will make the most of the good weather for as many field activities as possible, and we can connect with associations such as BIOM, BIOTEKA, Clean Bears, BIUS, and similar. In the colder part of the year, we will focus on the theory of sustainable development, projects, and workshops tailored to students’ interests and the content of the cross-curricular topic of Sustainable Development. Possible content, projects, and workshops: a) repurposing the flat part of the school roof into a pollinator garden b) making houses for solitary bees (they don’t sting!) c) school vegetable garden d) school waste sorting e) sustainable cooking workshop f) 5 R workshops (refuse-reduce-reuse-repurpose-recycle): e.g., transforming old books, toys, clothes, shoes into something new.

21ST CENTURY HOUSEHOLD

The goal is for students to acquire skills and knowledge that they will definitely need one day in life, regardless of gender and future profession. We will deal with cooking, sewing, handling basic tools, maintaining households (from repairs, changing light bulbs, cleaning to planning and using the household budget). Activities will be further tailored to students’ interests. We would meet once a week.

NEW! CULTURAL COUNTERATTACK!

Was the last time you went to the theater with your elementary school teacher? When someone mentions a concert, is Coby the first thing that comes to mind? Has required reading killed your desire to read? Are opera and ballet foreign concepts? Do only old people and art teachers go to exhibitions? Are movies just action?

Corona has created a huge gap in cultural education and spending free time on content that is valuable and enriching. Every week we will choose an exhibition, play, concert, movie, or book and talk with various cultural workers, opening new horizons worthy of classicists. Expect something new, good, and different, and one part will remain a secret.

You will be guided, encouraged, and introduced to the cultural world by Senia Belamarić Divjak, a Latin and Greek teacher.

NEW! BAND

The school band would meet once a week after auditions and rehearse a diverse repertoire for various school events. Singers and players of all instruments are welcome, and depending on the lineup, we will choose a repertoire where everyone can shine in what they love. Professor Posavec would take care of the instrumental part, while Professor Vučić would focus on rehearsing the vocal part of the band.

THEATER CYCLE

Two dramaturges will introduce you to all the secrets of the theater! Every other week, one theater play from different theaters will be watched to get an overview of the diverse Zagreb theater scene.

After each play, there will be an analysis and discussion about the play to develop critical thinking together. After the analyses, someone who worked on the play will join us to get to know different theater professions better. You will learn what a director does, what a dramaturge does, what the role of a stage manager is, what challenges actors face, the importance of costumes and set design, and how a lighting designer contributes to the atmosphere of a play. You will also attend some theater rehearsals to see the theater work process firsthand.

Mirna Rustemović and Nina Horvat are former PKG students and dramaturges working in completely different theaters – Mirna works at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, and Nina at the Tirena Theater, an independent theater for children and youth. Both will reveal how their theater functions so you can get to know different theater contexts.

Leaders: Mirna Rustemović and Nina Horvat, dramaturges Duration: In the first semester, one theater play will be watched every two weeks, and in a separate session, the plays will be analyzed and discussions will be held with various theater professionals who worked on those plays.
